SAINT PAULINE VISINTAINER SCHOLARSHIP

This year’s recipient of the St Pauline Visintainer Scholarship is Glenn Barwicki. The recipient must have played or participated in athletics for four years, must exhibit strong Christian Leadership, and mist have participated in some type of church-related activity during their four years, and must posses the qualities of brotherhood, friendship, and equality towards fellow students.

Glenn has been an altar server for four years at Holy Angels Parish in Kulpmont for the Rev Andrew Stahmer. He has volunteered at the annual picnic and was the recipient of the Cyril Leadership Award for Holy Angels Church. He has also volunteered for four years ay the Mount Carmel Celebration of Special Athletes and is a Holy Angels Christmas Party Volunteer. He has also recently become a 3rd degree knight with the Knights of Columbus.

He is currently ranked 5th in his class at Mount Carmel Area and has a perfect 4.0 GPA. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the National Athletic Honor Society and is a Student Council homeroom representative. He is also a member of the Spanish Club and the Calculus Club. He is currently attending Bloomsburg University’s ACE Program and obtaining college credits. Glenn hopes to pursue a career in civil engineering and has recently been accepted to Penn State University’s 2+2 program with 2 years at Hazleton and 2 years at University Park. He is waiting to hear from Bucknell, Lafayette, and Columbia.

Athletically, Glenn was a four-year letterman for Coach Carmen DeFrancesco’s Red Tornado Football Team. Gelnn’s unselfishness is noted in that he played fullback, offensive guard, defensive tackle, nose guard, and linebacker. It was his switch to defensive tackle during 2014 that helped to solidify the defensive front as the season progressed. His two blocked kicks in the Shamokin game had a great deal to do with MCA’s 33-32 overtime win over the Indians and preserve the 19 year winning streak. His performance in the game enabled him to be named the Mike Terry Award winner as a lineman. His 2 blocked kicks tied a single game mark held by Joe Ambrose since 1966, while his 5 career blocked kicks ties Steve Matzura for the career record at MCA. During his career Glenn recorded 176 tackles (50 solo-125 assisted) with 30 of them for loss. He also posted 8 QB sacks for 43 yards lost. Glenn was a member of the 2011 District IV Championship team, the 2012 District IV silver medalist team and the 2013, and 2014 District IV qualifying teams. He also was elected and served as one of the captains of the 2014 team. Following the season, Glenn was named to the News-Item, Press Enterprise, and Sunbury Daily Item all area teams. He was also the recipient of the Joe Buchinski Award at the Rotary Football banquet.

He is the son of Glenn and Ann Barwicki of Kulpmont.
