Gary was a standout football player for Shamokin High School during 1952 and 1955. Upon his graduation from Shamokin, He attended East Stroudsburg State College during the years of 1956 and 1959. When he graduated from East Stroudsburg, he became an assistant coach at Bloomsburg High School in 1960.
